Celebrities and Athletes Using HBOT: Why They Trust Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Celebrities and athletes are always on the lookout for the next big thing when it comes to health, wellness, and recovery. With their grueling schedules and the need to stay at the top of their game, it’s no wonder they turn to cutting-edge treatments to boost their performance and longevity. One treatment that has seen a meteoric rise in popularity among this elite group is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT).

From LeBron James to Justin Bieber, HBOT is being hailed as a game-changing therapy for everything from injury recovery to anti-aging. But what exactly is HBOT, and why are so many celebrities and athletes incorporating it into their routines? Let’s dive into the recent celebrity and athlete use of HBOT and explore how MD Hyperbaric is making this powerful therapy accessible to everyone.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, allowing your body to absorb oxygen at a much higher level than normal. This increased oxygen flow promotes healing, reduces inflammation, and enhances overall recovery. Originally used to treat decompression sickness in divers, HBOT is now used to treat a wide range of conditions, including athletic injuries, chronic fatigue, and even aging.

At MD Hyperbaric, we specialize in offering personalized HBOT treatments designed to meet the unique needs of each patient, whether you’re recovering from an injury, looking to boost athletic performance, or simply enhancing your overall wellness.

Celebrity Endorsements: Who’s Using HBOT?

1. LeBron James: The King of Recovery

LeBron James is known for his longevity in the NBA, and one of his secret weapons is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. The basketball legend has reportedly used HBOT as part of his rigorous recovery routine, which includes cryotherapy, massages, and other advanced techniques. For an athlete who spends over a million dollars annually on his body, it’s no surprise that LeBron turns to HBOT to help his body recover faster, reduce inflammation, and improve endurance.

At MD Hyperbaric, we provide the same cutting-edge technology that professional athletes like LeBron use to recover. Our state-of-the-art chambers are designed to promote quicker muscle recovery, reduce swelling, and help you get back to your peak performance—whether you’re an athlete or just looking to feel your best.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo: A Superstar’s Secret to Staying at the Top

Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the world’s most celebrated soccer players, is another athlete who uses HBOT to stay at his physical best. After suffering a knee injury, Ronaldo turned to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to speed up his recovery. The increased oxygen levels helped him heal faster, allowing him to return to the field quicker than traditional recovery methods would have allowed.

Ronaldo’s reliance on HBOT highlights just how powerful this therapy can be in accelerating healing. At MD Hyperbaric, we offer athletes of all levels the chance to recover faster from injuries, reduce downtime, and improve overall athletic performance through our personalized HBOT programs.

3. Justin Bieber: Turning to HBOT for Mental Health and Wellness

It’s not just athletes who are singing the praises of HBOT. Pop superstar Justin Bieber has been open about using hyperbaric oxygen therapy to improve his mental health and combat issues like anxiety and depression. Bieber reportedly keeps hyperbaric chambers in his home as part of his wellness routine.

While HBOT is often associated with physical recovery, more and more research is showing its potential for improving mental health. The increased oxygen flow can boost brain function, promote relaxation, and help with mood regulation. At MD Hyperbaric, we offer mental wellness-focused HBOT treatments, designed to reduce stress, promote better sleep, and support overall brain health.

4. Michael Phelps: The Olympic Champion’s Recovery Strategy

Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, is another proponent of HBOT. After his grueling training sessions and competitions, Phelps has used hyperbaric oxygen therapy to speed up recovery and maintain peak performance. By increasing oxygen delivery to tissues and reducing muscle soreness, Phelps is able to train harder and recover faster.

MD Hyperbaric’s services are tailored to athletes who need to perform at the highest levels. Whether you’re preparing for a marathon or recovering from an intense workout, our HBOT treatments can help you recover more efficiently—just like Michael Phelps.

5. Joe Namath: Using HBOT for Brain Health

NFL Hall of Famer Joe Namath has been a vocal advocate of HBOT, especially for its potential to treat brain injuries. After suffering from traumatic brain injuries (TBI) during his football career, Namath turned to hyperbaric oxygen therapy to improve cognitive function and reduce symptoms associated with TBI. His story has helped shed light on the potential of HBOT to treat neurological conditions, an area where MD Hyperbaric specializes.

At MD Hyperbaric, we work closely with patients suffering from brain injuries, including concussions and traumatic brain injuries, providing tailored HBOT treatments that promote brain healing, improve cognitive function, and enhance quality of life.

Why Are Celebrities and Athletes Turning to HBOT?

So, why has HBOT become so popular among high-profile individuals? Here are a few key reasons:

  • Faster Recovery Times: HBOT promotes healing by increasing oxygen delivery to tissues and reducing inflammation, leading to quicker recovery times. For athletes and celebrities with demanding schedules, this is invaluable.
  • Improved Athletic Performance: By enhancing muscle repair and reducing recovery time, HBOT allows athletes to train harder and perform better, which is why so many professional athletes incorporate it into their routines.
  • Anti-Aging Benefits: Celebrities are constantly in the public eye, and many are using HBOT for its potential anti-aging benefits. HBOT has been shown to improve skin elasticity, reduce wrinkles, and promote overall cell regeneration.
  • Mental Wellness: Celebrities like Justin Bieber use HBOT not just for physical benefits, but for mental health as well. The increased oxygen flow can help regulate mood, reduce anxiety, and promote better sleep.

At MD Hyperbaric, we offer tailored HBOT programs that deliver these same benefits to everyone—not just celebrities and athletes. Frequently Asked Questions

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a proven treatment that enhances healing by flooding the body with oxygen. Used for over 100 years, it supports brain health, anti-aging, athletic recovery, and medical conditions by boosting oxygen in blood, tissues, and organs. Patients breathe 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber, accelerating recovery and promoting cellular repair.

HBOT is FDA-approved for 14 conditions like burns, carbon monoxide poisoning, and non-healing wounds. Emerging research also supports its use for post-surgical recovery, brain injury, fatigue, inflammation, athletic recovery, and anti-aging. Our medical team will assess if HBOT is right for you.

Yes, HBOT is safe when properly supervised. At MD Hyperbaric, treatments are protocol-driven, medically overseen, and administered by certified staff. Our Medical Director and onsite Safety Director ensure every session is carefully monitored, and we continuously update our protocols based on the latest research to prioritize patient safety.

Typically, most treatment sessions are approximately 60 minutes, though some conditions may require up to 90 or 120 minutes. Pressurization and depressurization may add about 20 minutes to the appointment, so you should plan for about 90 minutes for your visit.

The number of sessions depends on the condition being treated. Some patients may benefit from a few sessions, while others may require a more extended treatment plan. A typical protocol will involve 10-40 daily sessions to build up oxygen in the cells. Our Medical Director will recommend a specific treatment plan to address your goals and needs.

Prior to treatment, please try to avoid alcohol or carbonated drinks. It is best to avoid smoking and other tobacco products during your treatment period, as they may interfere with the body's ability to transport oxygen. Otherwise, there are no restrictions for food or activity before or after your treatment. We encourage you to have healthy meals and stay hydrated.

Most patients find HBOT sessions relaxing. You will rest comfortably in a 7.5-foot-long steel chamber, breathing 100% pure oxygen through a mask. During pressurization and depressurization, you may feel pressure changes similar to airplane travel. A trained technician will monitor you throughout the session.

The term "dive" is used because the process simulates the experience of a deep-sea dive in a pressurized environment. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has deep roots in diving as an important therapy for treating divers experiencing decompression sickness.

At MD Hyperbaric, we use the FDA-cleared OxyHealth Fortius420, a spacious hard-shell chamber delivering 100% medical-grade oxygen via mask. It operates up to 3.0 ATA, allows tailored pressures, supports air breaks, and includes three windows for comfort and safety.

At MD Hyperbaric, we use hard-shell chambers that deliver 100% medical-grade oxygen at higher pressures for superior therapeutic benefits. Soft-shell chambers operate at lower pressures without medical-grade oxygen, making them less effective for medical treatment.

Our team will assess your medical history and specific circumstances through an intake process. An initial evaluation with certified staff and the Medical Director will determine your eligibility for HBOT.

No referral is needed. Our Medical Director will review your intake forms and prescribe HBOT if appropriate. If you have a prescription from a provider, we will coordinate with them. For serious health conditions, we may recommend getting clearance from your physician.

Some MD Hyperbaric centers accept insurance for certain on-label conditions — the FDA-recognized indications for which HBOT is an established standard of care. Whether insurance applies depends on your diagnosis, your plan, and the center you visit, so please contact your local center to confirm. Where insurance does not apply, HBOT is a self-pay treatment: most FSA/HSA plans allow reimbursement, and we can provide a superbill and receipt to help you submit a claim.

It depends on how you pay. For insurance-covered treatment at participating centers, your cost depends on your plan's deductible, copay, and coinsurance — the center verifies your benefits and explains expected costs before treatment begins. For self-pay treatment, we offer a variety of pricing options designed to suit different medical and financial needs, including pay-as-you-go and package options at reduced rates when purchased upfront. Please contact us to discuss pricing and options. We accept cash, credit, or check.
