FDA-cleared indications
The FDA has cleared hyperbaric oxygen therapy for the following uses. Clinical suitability and insurance coverage still depend on the individual case.
- Air or gas embolism
- Carbon monoxide poisoning (with or without cyanide poisoning)
- Gas gangrene (clostridial myositis and myonecrosis)
- Crush injury, compartment syndrome, and other acute traumatic ischemias
- Decompression sickness
- Arterial insufficiencies (central retinal artery occlusion; selected problem wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers)
- Severe anemia
- Intracranial abscess
- Necrotizing soft tissue infections
- Refractory osteomyelitis
- Delayed radiation injury (soft tissue and bony necrosis)
- Compromised skin grafts and flaps
- Acute thermal burn injury
The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society additionally recognizes idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss and avascular necrosis.
Participating MD Hyperbaric centers are in-network providers and accept insurance, including Medicare, for on-label referrals. Most plans require prior authorization; our team confirms which centers participate, verifies the patient’s benefits, and coordinates authorization with your office and the insurer.
