About Our Long Island Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Services

At MD Hyperbaric in Manhasset, NY, we specialize in medical-grade hyperbaric oxygen therapy — a scientifically backed treatment that accelerates healing by delivering 100% pure oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure in our hyperbaric oxygen chamber in Manhasset. Used in clinical settings for over a century, HBOT has proven benefits for a wide range of medical conditions, including chronic wounds, post-surgical recovery, inflammation, neurological disorders, and more.

Our patients undergo one-hour sessions inside advanced, pressurized steel chambers (7.5 feet in length with clear windows), breathing pure oxygen through a mask. This method—far more effective than softshell “mild” hyperbaric units found in spas or wellness centers—dramatically increases oxygen concentration in the blood, tissues, and organs, which in turn:

  • Stimulates stem cell activity and regeneration
  • Reduces inflammation and promotes immune function
  • Enhances vascular health and new blood vessel growth
  • Speeds up recovery from injury or surgery
  • Fights infection and supports cellular repair

Unlike softshell or “mild” HBOT bags, which operate at significantly lower pressures and use only room air or diluted oxygen, our FDA-approved hard chambers ensure optimal therapeutic outcomes in a controlled, medically supervised environment.

Conditions HBOT Treatments Can Help Support

MD Hyperbaric in Manhasset, NY, offers comprehensive, medically supervised HBOT to support healing, recovery, and long-term wellness. Our expert Medical Directors work closely with your physician to deliver customized treatment plans for a wide range of conditions right here on Long Island’s North Shore.

Neurological and Brain Health

Our HBOT center treats neurological conditions, including:

  • Concussions and traumatic brain injuries (TBI): Hyperbaric oxygen therapy reduces neuroinflammation and supports neural repair following head trauma, helping alleviate persistent symptoms like headaches, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating that often linger after the initial injury.
  • COVID-related brain fog: Many individuals experiencing lingering cognitive difficulties after COVID-19 find relief through HBOT sessions that enhance oxygen delivery to brain tissue, improving mental clarity, focus, and memory function.
  • PTSD, anxiety, and depression: By increasing oxygen supply to areas of the brain affected by trauma and stress, HBOT can help regulate mood, reduce anxiety symptoms, and support emotional well-being as part of a comprehensive mental health treatment plan.
  • Cognitive decline and neuroinflammation: Our protocols target the underlying inflammation that contributes to memory loss and cognitive impairment, promoting healthier brain function and potentially slowing the progression of neurodegenerative processes.

Wellness, Recovery, and Anti-Aging

HBOT enhances overall health and vitality by supporting:

  • Athletic performance and recovery: Professional and recreational athletes use HBOT to accelerate muscle repair, reduce lactic acid buildup, and shorten recovery time between training sessions, giving them a competitive edge and reducing injury risk.
  • Post-surgical healing: Following procedures ranging from orthopedic surgeries to cosmetic interventions, HBOT promotes faster wound healing, minimizes scar tissue formation, and reduces the risk of post-operative complications through enhanced tissue oxygenation.
  • Anti-aging and skin regeneration: Increased oxygen delivery stimulates collagen production and cellular turnover, improving skin elasticity, reducing fine lines, and promoting a more youthful appearance from the inside out.
  • Cognitive clarity and immune support: Regular HBOT sessions can enhance mental sharpness, boost immune system function, and increase overall energy levels, supporting optimal wellness and longevity for health-conscious individuals.

Chronic and Complex Conditions

We also provide HBOT care for chronic and complex conditions, including:

  • Stroke, migraines, and fibromyalgia: Oxygen therapy addresses the vascular and inflammatory components of these conditions, potentially reducing symptom frequency and severity while improving quality of life for those managing chronic neurological and pain-related challenges.
  • Lyme disease and autoimmune disorders: HBOT helps combat the persistent inflammation and immune dysfunction characteristic of Lyme disease and various autoimmune conditions, supporting the body’s natural healing processes and symptom management.
  • Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and dementia: While not a cure, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may help slow disease progression and improve cognitive function in neurodegenerative conditions by reducing brain inflammation and supporting neuronal health.
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS), cerebral palsy, and autism: Patients with these neurological conditions often experience improvements in motor function, cognitive abilities, and overall symptom management through targeted HBOT protocols that support nervous system health.
  • Acute vision and hearing loss: When treated promptly, sudden vision or hearing loss caused by vascular issues may respond to hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which restores oxygen supply to affected sensory organs and can help preserve or restore function.

Preparing for Your Treatment

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a proven treatment that enhances healing by flooding the body with oxygen. Used for over 100 years, it supports brain health, anti-aging, athletic recovery, and medical conditions by boosting oxygen in blood, tissues, and organs. Patients breathe 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber, accelerating recovery and promoting cellular repair.

HBOT is FDA-approved for 14 conditions like burns, carbon monoxide poisoning, and non-healing wounds. Emerging research also supports its use for post-surgical recovery, brain injury, fatigue, inflammation, athletic recovery, and anti-aging. Our medical team will assess if HBOT is right for you.

Yes, HBOT is safe when properly supervised. At MD Hyperbaric, treatments are protocol-driven, medically overseen, and administered by certified staff. Our Medical Director and onsite Safety Director ensure every session is carefully monitored, and we continuously update our protocols based on the latest research to prioritize patient safety.

Typically, most treatment sessions are approximately 60 minutes (some conditions may require up to 90 or 120 minutes). In addition to the actual treatment time, there is time required for the pressurization and depressurization of the chamber, which may add 20 minutes to the overall appointment. The exact duration will depend on your specific treatment plan and the pressure levels used, but you should plan for about 90 minutes for your visit.

The number of sessions depends on the condition being treated. Some patients may benefit from a few sessions, while others may require a more extended treatment plan. A typical protocol will involve 10-40 daily sessions to build up oxygen in the cells. Our Medical Director will recommend a specific treatment plan to address your goals and needs.

Prior to treatment, please try to avoid alcohol or carbonated drinks. It’s best to avoid smoking and any other tobacco products during your treatment period, as they may interfere with the body’s ability to transport oxygen. This can directly affect the time it takes you to heal, and under no circumstance can you smoke 2 hours before or after a session. Otherwise, there are no restrictions for food or activity before or after your treatment. We encourage you to have healthy meals and stay hydrated.

Most patients find HBOT sessions relaxing. You’ll rest comfortably in a 7½-foot-long steel chamber, breathing 100% pure oxygen through a mask. The oxygen has no smell or taste. During pressurization and depressurization, you may feel pressure changes, similar to airplane travel. A trained technician will monitor you throughout the session. You can sit or lie down inside the chamber, and afterward, you can resume normal activities, stay hydrated, and rest.

The term “dive” is used because the process simulates the experience of a deep-sea dive in a pressurized environment. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has deep roots in diving as it is an important therapy in treating divers that are experiencing “the bends”. In the context of hyperbaric, pressure is increased to levels greater than atmospheric pressure, similar to what divers experience underwater.

At MD Hyperbaric, we use the FDA-cleared OxyHealth Fortius420—a spacious, hard-shell chamber delivering 100% medical-grade oxygen via mask. Operating up to 3.0 ATA, it allows tailored pressures (typically 2.0–2.4 ATA) and supports air breaks for added benefits. With three windows and a 7½-foot length, it ensures comfort and meets the highest safety standards.

At MD Hyperbaric, we use hard-shell chambers that deliver 100% medical-grade oxygen at higher pressures for superior therapeutic benefits. In contrast, soft-shell chambers operate at lower pressures without medical-grade oxygen, making them less effective for medical treatment.

Our team will assess your medical history and specific circumstances through an intake process and initial evaluation with our certified staff and Medical Director will determine your eligibility for HBOT.

No referral is needed. Our Medical Director will review your intake forms and prescribe HBOT if appropriate. If you have a prescription from a provider, we’ll coordinate with them. For serious health conditions, we may recommend getting clearance from your physician.

HBOT is generally not covered by insurance, though most FSA/HSA plans allow reimbursement (check with your provider). MD Hyperbaric is an out-of-network provider, so patients pay out-of-pocket. If you have one of the 14 insurance-approved conditions, reimbursement may be possible. We can provide a superbill and receipt to help you submit a claim to your insurer.
